GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst: Detailed, Consistent Edits
Sunburst is the GPT Image 2.6 series for images that have to hold up on close inspection, and for edits that build on one another. OpenAI says that for detail- and precision-heavy tasks at medium or high quality, it produces higher-quality images and keeps images more consistent across editing rounds. That is OpenAI's description; we have not tested it ourselves.

Who Sunburst suits
- Brand and e-commerce teams changing a campaign image step by step while the product, label and colors need to stay put.
- Illustrators and storytellers placing the same character in new scenes.
- Designers studying materials, textures and small details that a rough draft would not show.
When to skip Sunburst
Go to Flare when you are still looking for the idea and want many quick drafts, or when the job is mostly about layout. OpenAI's six-second figure is about Flare at low quality, and it does not describe Sunburst.
GPT Image 2.6 Flare for fast drafts →Recommended Sunburst settings
- Work at medium or high quality
- This is where OpenAI describes Sunburst's advantage, so a low-quality attempt is a poor test of what it is for.
- Make one change at a time
- Ask for a single edit each round. If a round goes wrong, you know which instruction caused it, and you can go back to the last good image.
- Say what must not change
- Name the things that have to stay: label text, logo, face, proportions, colors. Mask editing is not offered here, so your words set the boundaries of each edit.
- Build on reference images
- Attach the latest approved image for the next round, up to four references in all. Each one adds credits, so attach only what carries information the prompt cannot.
Sunburst prompts for edits that must hold steady
These prompts are built around detail and repeated editing, the work OpenAI points Sunburst at. Use medium or high quality, and attach your own image where a prompt asks for one.
A product edited over three rounds
Run the rounds in order, one generation each. Attach your product photo for round 1, then attach the approved result for each later round. Every round makes one change and lists what stays fixed.
Original generation prompt (English)
Use the attached product photo as the reference. Replace only the background with a warm limestone surface in soft morning window light. Keep the product's shape, proportions, label text, logo and colors exactly as they are.
Original generation prompt (English)
Use the attached image from the previous round as the reference. Add one sprig of dried lavender lying to the left of the product. Keep the product, label text, logo, background and lighting unchanged.
Original generation prompt (English)
Use the attached image from the previous round as the reference. Change only the lid to brushed silver. Keep the label text, logo, product shape, lavender, background and lighting unchanged.
One character in a new scene
Attach a clear image of your character first. The prompt separates what stays from what may change, which gives you a specific checklist for inspecting the result.
Original generation prompt (English)
Use the attached image as the character reference. Show the same character in a new scene: a rainy night market, standing under a red awning and holding a paper lantern. Keep the face, hairstyle, eye color, body proportions, outfit and art style exactly the same. Change only the setting, the pose and the lighting.A detailed material study
This one needs no reference image. Leather grain, stitching and worn metal are good subjects for judging fine detail, so choose 2K or 4K if you want to inspect them closely.
Original generation prompt (English)
Detailed material study of a handmade leather wallet on a dark walnut desk, close up, with the look of a macro lens. Show the grain of vegetable-tanned leather, saddle stitching in waxed cream thread, a burnished edge, a small brass snap with light wear, and the open pores of the wood. One soft side light from the left, the far edge slightly out of focus, no text and no logos.Sunburst credits per image
Sunburst and Flare cost the same credits at the same settings, so picking Sunburst adds nothing by itself. Higher quality and resolution do use more, as this table shows.
| Quality | 1K | 2K | 4K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 2 | 4 | 6 |
| Medium | 4 | 7 | 11 |
| High | 6 | 10 | 16 |
| Extra high | 10 | 16 | 24 |
| Maximum | 16 | 30 | 48 |
Each reference image adds 30 credits per output. Fixed credits depend on resolution, quality and reference images. The exact charge is shown before you generate. Failed generation is not charged.
Editing with Sunburst on FreeGPT.IM
Sunburst needs a paid plan. Bring up to four reference images or begin with a text prompt, then work at 1K, 2K or 4K across five quality levels. A paid plan also covers GIF and SVG creation from a text prompt.
You cannot paint a mask, add markup or set a transparent background here, so describe each edit in words. Without a subscription, the free generator offers GPT Image 2.5 still images only.
GPT Image 2.6 Sunburst questions
Flare vs Sunburst: when is Sunburst the better choice?
Choose Sunburst when small details matter or when an image goes through several rounds of edits. OpenAI says that at medium or high quality it gives higher-quality results for this work and more consistency between rounds. We have not declared a winner, because we have not run a controlled test.
Does Sunburst cost more credits than Flare?
No. They cost the same at the same settings. Your charge depends on resolution, quality and the number of reference images, and it appears before you generate.
How do I keep a product or character consistent across edits?
Attach the latest approved image, ask for one change, and list what must stay the same. Compare each result with the previous image before you continue, because consistency is not guaranteed.
Can I mask part of an image when editing with Sunburst here?
No. Mask editing and markup are not offered on FreeGPT.IM. Describe the area in words instead, for example "change only the lid", and name what should not change.
